Can Lamps light up Italian football?

Inter fans are in no doubt that Frank Lampard will sign for the club but he isn’t going to have much time to win over such ever-demanding followers.

In the die-hard Nerazzurri cafes in Milan they are not exactly raising their coffee cups to toast the arrival of the Chelsea man.

The armchair coaches would have preferred to have seen Deco in the black and blue if Jose Mourinho was going to buy a thirty-something midfielder.

"What do you mean Inter fans aren't that fussed"

However, it’s in Jose we trust and the Portuguese can do no wrong at the moment although a ball has yet to be kicked in anger.

Maybe it’s the oppressive heat hanging over the city that’s causing such lethargy but, in general, shrugs greet the imminent arrival of the England international.

It’s not as if anyone here really follows the English Premier League that closely, or that apart from Didier Drogba and John Terry, most run-of-the-mills fans would be hard-pushed to name another Chelsea player.

There is no doubt that Lampard is a good player but then Serie A is full of good players – and then there are superstars: those considered fuoriclassi who even the most money-grabbing club owners would be loath to lose.

Inter already have Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marco Materazzi (only kidding) and one in the making in Marco Balotelli, then there is Ricky Kaka and Andrea Pirlo at AC Milan, AS Roma’s Francesco Totti and Juventus veteran Alessandro Del Piero.

Their star quality go hand-in-hand with an ability and all-round game to take control of a match and determine its outcome.

Inter fans adored the last English man to wear the club shirt: Paul Ince.

However, he was a crowd favourite for all the things they expected from an English footballer: non-stop running, a never-say-die spirit for the cause, crunching tackles and the ability to shout and wave his fist at the same time.

The Guvnor: Last Englishman to don the blue and black kit

Lampard won’t be expected to run himself into the ground or raise his voice – Esteban Cambiasso and captain Javier Zanetti already do that.

His more advanced position in the pitch requires skill, guile, speed off the mark, an eye for the unexpected, coupled with a ruthlessness to strike fear into even the most demonic of man-markers whose lair is just in front of the defence.

These are the qualities possessed by the likes of Kaka or Antonio Cassano and for Inter fans this is what they will expect from Lamps but has he got what it takes to light up Italian football?

Perhaps Inter supporters DO know about Lampard, and that's why they're apathetic about his joining.  He's not a player who is going to dramatically improve any club he joins; look at his (low) pricetag.  Mourinho probably has it in for his former boss, and if he can get Lampard on the cheap, it'll be nothing more than a small personal victory and may actually improve Chelsea in the process by not having him in the first XI...

He will not be as good as he is now.Although he will be reunited with Jose, he does not have the potential to suceed playing Inter's game and style. But, that's my opinion

To be honest I think i would rather Paul Ince as he is now to Lampard - another example of an overrated player because he is English. Something that Nerazzurri fans just won't care about!

Oh come on! Lampard or Deco? Anyone who has seen Chelsea and Barcelona play in the last two seasons will know that Lamps is a much more effective midfielder than Deco. If you doubt this have a look the number of goals Lampard averages a season compared with Deco. If you need further proof consider Laporte's delight at unloading Deco and compate it with Abramovich's reluctance to let lampard leave.

As a Seria A fan living in the UK I would love to see Lampard sign for Inter as this might increase coverage of Italian football on our screens and possibly even encorage the likes of Sky or Channel 4 to cover a live game each weekend. How about Marcotti and Lamps being the new James Richardson and Gazza?

what is it with Italian clubs buying over priced, over hyped foreigners, rather than getting the best Italian players into their sides, they're world champs for goodness sake there must be a couple that are half decent!!! Inter, Roma and milan have some of the best Italian youngster on their books, its no wonder the epl clubs are snapping them up 'cause they know they'll never get a chance in serie A

Comparing Lampard and Deco doesn't work for me. Lampard gets a lot more goals than Deco because he shoots within 40 yards of the goal, rather than passing the ball to a team-mate in a better position (and sometimes they come off for him!). Deco's is less selfish, but can be slightly over-elaborate.
